Drawing Inspiration from Industrial Design

One of the goals of this blog is to provide new inspiration for you as a designer. Obviously one of the best places for design inspiration is from design. But it does not have to be from the same subcategory of design. Industrial Design is a great source of inspiration for anything, however it is commonly overlooked. Here are several pieces that I have found inspiring.

Ross Lovegrove\'s System X

Modular Lighting
This piece is Ross Lovegrove’s System X that uses X shaped lights that you can link together to form different shapes. What I found particularly inspiring about this is the organic grid like pattern they form of bright white against a darker background. Also, I found that having something that can be changed, however keeping the original base shapes an interesting concept.

Milk Desk

Milk (Desk)
The Milk, a desk, is inspiring in its use of bold rectangular shapes to form a functional and minimalist design. Then, what makes it different, is its use of hidden boxes and compartments that expand, increasing the functionality of the desk, without sacrificing simplicity.

Wood Cutting Board

Cutting Board
This, and possibly a few other designs, reminded me that curves bring movement into design, and also reminded me that using natural textures in design can highly affect the outcome of the final design. It also shows that a designer does not have to invent something, but rather innovate something.

Voss Water

Voss Water
As if water was not pure enough. Voss water redesigned the water bottle and brought pure and simple design to a common design.
