What Makes A Great Web Design: Part 2

Note: Check out Part 1 if you missed it!
Earlier this week I wrote a post describing what makes a great web design. I covered the header, usability, typography, C.R.A.P. and color. In this entry, I will continue with the list.
- Remembrance
- Style Your Pictures
- 404 Pages
- CSS Tricks
When designing a web site, you need its name all over it, but not in the obnoxious sense. When a you get a visitor, the first thing you want them to know is whose site this is because then, even if they leave, they still will remember your site. This applies to logos as well, you should place your logo in a place to be seen, so once again, every visitor will remember it.
However, remembrance is not just about putting a name on a design. Many principles of design, particularly contrast are not just meant to make a design easier to look out. Contrast is meant to make a design stand out, and with remembrance, you want the design to stand out in a person’s mind.
People hate large blocks of text. What also annoys visitors is pictures that completely clash with the rest of the design. This is why it is important to separate a picture from the rest of the design, particularly if the color scheme breaks the flow of your design.
After awhile, “file not found” has gotten boring and tiring. Why not try changing up the design and making 404 pages a bit different, and creative. While it may seem like this is a minor detail, remember that many times it is the tiny details the distinguish a design. Details show how far a designer goes in order to make a great design.
CSS tricks are really just advanced demonstrations of CSS. In web design, understanding CSS is key, and once you do, design your websites to show off your knowledge. Although this may seem like a discreet form of bragging, it really just makes the website blur the lines of what is common with the limitations of a lack of CSS skill.
So, this is what it takes to make a great web design. While I may come back and add to this list, these are the basics to making a great web design. But, remember, with design it is important to learn the rules, tips, and guidelines, then build off of them, to make a truly original design.
